Course Description

The College is the Splendor and Light of the Common Good Decus Lumenque Reipublicae Collegium This is the motto of DePauw University. It is the core of our responsibility as members of this community. “If there is still one hellish, truly accursed thing in our time, it is our artistic dallying with forms, instead of being like victims burnt at the stake, signaling through the flames.” Antonin Artaud, The Theatre and Its Double “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” Groucho Marx. What are we doing? Each student will complete an original scholarly or creative project, based on your own research. Each project will center on Communication Studies, Media, and/or Theatre, but will be a culmination of your entire college career. Why Utopia? “Utopia” is actually just part of the subtitle of Thomas More’s famous work. The full title is The Best State of the Commonwealth and the New Island of Utopia. So, I want you to consider how your final project will contribute to “the best state of the commonwealth.” This also requires you to define for yourself what, in fact, IS, “the best state of the commonwealth.” How are we doing it? Talking with alumni - how will you connect this experience to your next life step? Foundational readings - in order to see possibilities of “the best state of the commonwealth.” Display your expertise in presenting and in leading discussion. As Comm students, you should be the most expert presenters and discussion leaders on campus. Support and share each other’s work through informed discussion, where we productively challenge each other through formal and informal presentations, discussions, and writing workshops. Course Description (taken from the university catalog) Senior Seminar, COMM 450. The integrated conclusion of the departmental curriculum with emphasis on research methodology and writing.
