Course Description

This course is an introduction to the foundations of finance with an emphasis on applications and theory that are critical for corporate management. Students will develop an understanding of the major financial decisions within the firm that impact the value of the firm. This course will cover the importance of ethical evaluation and analysis in finance. Topics include ethical issues related to stakeholders, agency theory, the time value of money, risk and return in the context of equities and bonds, interest rates and the term structure, risk management and firm investment decisions, capital budgeting, optimal capital structure, and dividend policy.

Student Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • build their knowledge and understanding of financial theory.
  • develop their analytical reasoning skills and their ability to think critically using financial and economic reasoning.
  • apply effective written and oral communication skills within the finance discipline.
  • learn quantitative analysis techniques and apply these techniques to evaluate financial arguments.
  • interpret the nature and goal of a corporation, financial management, and basic financial theories.
  • apply the time value of money to various streams of cash flows; evaluate value of securities and firms, and cash flow aspects of financial statements.
  • utilize various methods for evaluating firm projects and identify their relative strengths in capital budgeting.
