Course Description

The triumph of market reasoning in the field of economics has encouraged us to extend market values and rationality to nearly every aspect of life. In What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets, Michael Sandel asks us to consider what what it means to go from having a market economy to being a market society. Is there any part of life where market norms do not belong? Is there anything wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? Do market values risk crowding out civic practices and democratic norms? We will explore these and similar questions raised by Sandel closely and carefully.
