Abstract
In what follows, I draw attention to a key feature of institutional complexity that under-pins Ben-Porath’s argument (and most others) in defense of higher education aims: namely, the role students play, or are assumed to play, in pursuit and achievement of institutional goals. I raise practical concerns about the pursuit of institutional aims without student awareness of and preparation for their essential role in these projects. I highlight how Ben-Porath addresses some of these concerns about the role of students in the democratic project of higher education while suggesting there is room to expand her recommendations for institutions to address these concerns more explicitly via education on the institution’s aims.
