Course Description
Elementary Japanese I is designed to provide the fundamentals of Japanese language to students who have not had any previous training in the language. This course will be a base to advance your Japanese. Our goals are: 1. To internalize authentic Japanese sounds. 2. To learn two writing systems, namely Hiragana and Katakana. 3. To learn about 30 Kanji characters. 4. To learn simple conversations in Japanese such as introducing oneself, asking and answering simple questions, describing objects and so forth. 5. To establish a solid foundation of basic Japanese grammar. 6. To become familiar with Japanese culture through the language. 7. To cultivate an analytical mind through language learning. Speaking Japanese in class is very important to achieve our goals. Please be mindful about using Japanese as much as you can.

Student Outcomes
When you successfully finish this course, you will be able to: Utilize a basic knowledge of Japanese, including the four writing scripts (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, and Romaji), clear pronunciation of each sound, good grasp of grammatical functions, Identify different levels of formality valued in Japanese culture. Express their daily life in simple terms.
