Abstract
Individuals with autism often have difficulties with emotion regulation. This lack of emotional regulation can cause frequent disruptions and an inability to cope. Leah Kuypers, an occupation therapist and autism resource specialist, found that these individuals were not given any help to control these behaviors. Thus, she developed The Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation is a "systematic, cognitive behavior approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience in four concrete zones" (Kuypers). The four zones are: Red Zone, Yellow Zone, Green Zone, and Blue Zone. The Green Zone is the optimal Zone for individuals to reside in. Overall, The Zones of Regulation has proven to be a successful tool and will be the idea behind Devon Mensching’s Senior Project. For her Senior Project, she will build an Android application and a web application. The Android application will be used by students with autism. Every hour the students will be asked to select which Zone they are in. This will encourage students to recognize which Zone they are in and identify how to get back into or stay in the Green Zone. The data from this application will then be sent to the web application. The web application will be for the use of therapists, parents and guardians. These individuals will be able to log into the web application and pull up data on the Zones the student has selected. The data will be able to be searched by day, week, month, and year. Altogether, this project will help in a successful execution of The Zones of Regulation curriculum.
