Course Description

This course is the second half of the elementary Latin sequence and, as such, has the following main goals: • To equip you with all you need to work directly with Latin texts. If you master the course materials in LAT124, you will understand all the core grammatical structures in Latin and be able to work on real Latin texts with the aid of appropriate commentaries and a Latin dictionary. • To improve your skills and strategies reading Latin and understanding complex sentences and continuous passages of Latin. • To improve your understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. • To give you some perspective on Roman civilization in order to understand the context of Latin passages you read. Learn Latin from the Romans is a thorough and well-designed introduction to Latin. It prioritizes understanding grammar and reading skills over acquiring a large working vocabulary. In Latin 124 we explore more complicated grammatical structures and build upon the Latin 123 base. We will usually complete a chapter every two class days. Like any foreign language, Latin 124 requires hard work, including memorization of forms and vocabulary. The payoff is access to a huge body of Latin literature. We tend to think of Latin only in its Classical context, but Latin was the lingua franca of the educated world until the 18th century. Students of language and literature obviously benefit from study of Latin (any English poetry fan should know Latin poetry), but so do students of history, philosophy, law, economics, political science, and the history of science.

Student Outcomes

The student will be able to: 1) Demonstrate comprehension of basic Latin morphology, syntax, and vocabulary; 2) Read, comprehend, and translate basic Latin texts; 3) Identify the Latin roots of English vocabulary; 4) Apply knowledge of language acquired through study of Latin to become more capable, confident, and skilled in reading, reasoning, writing, and speaking.
