Course Description

I believe that students learn about acting and theatre by doing it. This class will have a heavy performance element that will allow you to engage with the theories we read about in the required texts through active participation in class discussions, acting exercises, theatre games, structured improvisations, and scene study. You will also begin to develop your craft as an actor— developing vocal, physical, emotional, and analytical technique. Throughout the semester, you will gain knowledge and confidence in a variety of areas including: verbal and nonverbal communication; perception; listening; interpersonal communication; small group collaboration, public speaking, and performing arts. This thing we call Communication is one of the most basic, and yet complicated elements in all of our lives. The more you know about it and how you use it will determine how successful and enriched your life can be. It is my sincere hope that you leave this class with a better understanding of yourself, as well as a large collection of skills in the performing arts. Remember, the skills and habits you develop now will influence how you live your life in the future. Through the course of the semester, you will explore acting in a variety of games, exercises, workshops, improvisations, and through scene study. You will practice prepared cold readings and you will be memorizing and performing scenes “off-book.” You will also be practicing your communication skills through reading, writing, speaking, and listening during a wide range of activities and projects that may be individual, small group or whole group. Each assignment provides a hands-on approach and an opportunity to explore and create theatre as well as to stretch your comfort zone and grow as a performing artist.
