Play Summary

In 1905 New York City, Esther, a Black seamstress, is in great demand for the intimate apparel she creates for clients ranging from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. Though she fills others’ lives with beauty, she longs for love and a future of her own. Through a mutual acquaintance, she begins a correspondence with George, a lonesome Caribbean man working on the Panama Canal, and soon he persuades her to marry him sight unseen. Yet Esther’s heart is drawn to the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys her cloth. When George finally arrives in New York, Esther must confront the truth of her choices and a future she could not have imagined.
