Course Description

Do the ends justify the means? Does God exist? What is it like to be a bat? In this course, we will explore these and other fundamental philosophical questions. No prior experience with philosophy is expected or required. This course satisfies DePauw’s Arts and Humanities distribution requirement. It is designed to teach you to develop your capacities for clear and independent thought, to express your own ideas and others’ ideas clearly both orally and in writing, and to engage in serious ethical and philosophical reflection.

Student Outcomes

● Students will be able to state some central philosophical questions and describe some of the main answers to those questions that have been proposed. ● Students will be able to analyze philosophical arguments, identifying important strengths and weaknesses in those arguments. ● Students will be to develop their own views on important philosophical questions and defend those views in both speech and writing.
