Course Description
The main objective of this course is to gain a basic understanding of the medium of photography, while exploring creative image making, as a means of personal expression. Students will be expected to explore the communicative and expressive potentials of the medium, while developing visual literacy. In addition, students will be challenged to pursue the thoughtful development of ideas, and create projects that reflect a critical voice. This course will cover basic techniques of the 35 mm digital photography. Students will gain basic familiarity with camera skills and develop a vocabulary to discuss the inherent qualities of photography. Through slide presentations, assignments, technical demonstrations, readings, class discussions and critiques, students will be provided with the necessary skills to both create and interpret photographic work. Assignments will provide the opportunity to explore a range of approaches and concepts. Students will be expected to use these new skills to challenge their assumptions about the field of photography, and simultaneously create meaning within their photographs. Furthermore, these skills will be useful in providing students with the ability to engage critically in the world of photography outside the classroom.
