Course Description

Elementary Japanese II is designed to provide the fundamentals of Japanese language to students who have taken one semester of college Japanese class. Our goals are: 1. To internalize authentic Japanese sounds 2. To learn approximately 80 new Kanji characters and their Kanji compounds 3. To learn simple conversations in Japanese such as describing people, objects and on-going actions, asking permission, making suggestions, talking about past events/plans with friends and so forth 4. To establish a solid foundation of basic Japanese grammar 5. To become familiar with Japanese culture through the language 6. To cultivate an analytical mind through language learning 7. To be able to discuss Japanese culture in simple terms

Student Outcomes

After successfully finishing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe people, objects, and actions in simple Japanese
  • Express your thoughts in simple Japanese
  • Express your preferences in simple Japanese
  • Express and Explain the different degrees of formality in Japanese
  • Analyze and explain Japanese culture that shapes Japanese linguistic behavior
  • Compare Japanese culture to culture(s) you are familiar with
