Course Description

"Being Human in STEM” (HSTEM) is a student-centered course that combines academic inquiry and community engagement to investigate the themes of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice within STEM fields-- at DePauw and beyond. HSTEM prepares participants to lead lives of consequence as lifelong learners and effective collaborative organizers for equity and inclusion in all of their future communities.

Student Outcomes

1. Students will be able to reflect on their own experiences as humans in STEM and position them within the broader context of disparities and structures in STEM. 2. Students will embrace respect, compassion, caring, and integrity while challenging themselves and all participants to brave the discomfort and disagree respectfully and work to include minority viewpoints even if they are not brought up in the room. 3. Students will be able to initiate and guide a collaborative process (listening, validating, reflecting, partnering) with their (STEM) communities to design, implement, and assess anti-racist interventions. 4. Students will be able to interpret literature about lived experiences in STEM both quantitative (statistics and data-driven reports on representation in STEM) and qualitative (sociological and historical accounts). 5. Students will be able to apply evidence about issues of identity, inequity, and inclusion (in STEM) in order to lead and facilitate discussions across different viewpoints in these areas. 6. Students will be able to identify and raise awareness of racist systems and policies (in STEM disciplines and professions).
