Course Description
The principal myths and legends of the ancient world, with consideration of the nature of myth, the social origin and evolution of myths, their relation to religion and philosophy and their use in literature and art.

Student Outcomes
The student will be able to: 1) Analyze primary literary sources from the ancient Mediterranean world to examine how people used narrative to explore their realities; 2) Identify key characters, motifs, and story patterns from Greek and Roman mythology; 3) Apply interpretive methods in mythology to understand and appreciate distinct ancient social and cultural phenomena; 4) Demonstrate how Greek and Roman myth continues to influence art and culture meaningfully in the modern world and how it relates to their own life and interests.
