Course Description

English 149 is an introduction to creative writing in a workshop setting using readings from contemporary poets and writers as models. Creative writing allows us to reconnect with the sensory thinking of earlier youth that we may have abandoned for the logical thinking we do in classes that privilege analytical thinking. Creative writing draws from everything at our disposal in order to create an expression of your individual point of view, a necessary fusion of your outer and inner environment, and a mix of realism and surrealism. Generative writing workshops are designed not to produce great works of literary art, but to teach you the skills you will need to produce more accomplished imaginative writing in the future. You will also be introduced to a collaborative process of learning in which you will be expected to develop your skills in revising your work and the work of others in the class. At the end of the semester, you will submit a final portfolio culminating your creative writing in fiction and poetry.

Student Outcomes

By the end of the semester, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate creative writing skills in fiction and poetry, as well as a third genre such as creative nonfiction, playwriting, or screenwriting, depending on instructor.

2. Give and receive constructive feedback utilizing the workshop method.

3. Develop the ability to revise their own work based on the feedback they receive.

4. Build a portfolio of writing samples in multiple genres.

5. Engage with guest speakers, such as writers, editors, and/or publishers, who can provide insights into the field.
