Course Description

This course engages literature across national regions and geographical borders, literary genres, and forms of media to explore the human condition. Our study of world literature will anchor each reading in historical and cultural context to amplify our critical engagement with perspectives, voices, aesthetic traditions from people and places outside of the United States. Ultimately, this course will help students develop and refine analytical and close reading skills, understand (literary) cultural production within a global context, and take into account the interconnectedness of culture, politics, and power. Crosslisted with WLIT 105.

Student Outcomes

By the end of the semester, students will be able to:

1. Read and understand texts from a variety of literary genres.
2. Understand and use basic literary critical terms.
3. Articulate their own ideas about literature, both verbally and in writing.
