Course Description

This course will introduce you to ways social determinants and health equity influence the health of individuals, communities, and populations using an interdisciplinary approach. We will examine key factors such socioeconomic status, stress, early childhood experiences, social relationships, privilege, environment, employment, and behaviors impact the health outcomes on a local and global scale. Unlike classes that require memorization of facts, memorization is not a key learning outcome in our class. Rather, we are working on skills in critical reading, critical thinking, and drawing connections about a wide array of interdisciplinary information. We will use case studies, research articles, videos, and book chapters over a range of topics that influence health outcomes. Our class requires your commitment to complete and critically reflect on course information, to engage with classmates, and to integrate new information and insight across the semester.
