Course Description

This course will introduce you to the field of global health using an interdisciplinary approach while considering historical, social, environmental, cultural, political, and economic factors that shape overall health. We will examine global health using case studies, research articles, videos, and book chapters over a range of topics that influence health outcomes.

Rather than a focus on one location, population, or period of time, our course will examine the different perspectives and approaches to health and disease considering people globally. Like the field of global health, we will especially focus on the challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries as well as health disparities in high-income countries. Unlike classes that require memorization of facts, memorization is not a key learning outcome in our class. Rather, we are working on skills in critical reading, critical thinking, and drawing connections about a wide array of interdisciplinary information. Our class requires your commitment to complete required readings, to critically reflect on information, to engage with classmates, and to integrate new information and insight across the semester.
