Course Description

This course is centered around the intensive study of the Spanish language with emphasis on the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. An equally important component to this course is the study of Spanish-speaking cultures and practicing communication through authentic contexts. Given the nature of language learning and the material to be covered over the course of the semester, this class will require a significant investment of time and effort outside of class to master the concepts and meet the expectations of the course. The beginning of the course will move quickly and be treated as a review. This means that some students may need to put more effort into the beginning of the class since students may enter with different proficiency levels. Students who find the beginning of the course to be less demanding should similarly be prepared to put in more effort once new material is introduced as the course goes on. This course uses a flipped format, where students are expected to review the appropriate concepts beforehand (see the topics listed on Supersite and emails) and show up to class prepared for (a) minimal review time, and (b) dedicating most of the class time to putting this knowledge to practice through communicative activities. If you feel you are lost or are falling behind, despite your best efforts, please come to see me immediately. This course is meant to challenge you and maintaining an open line of communication is critically important to the learning process.

Student Outcomes

1. Review prior knowledge (grammar and vocabulary) of Spanish, and to expand on that foundation. 2. Incorporate more complex structures and expressions, particularly as they relate to the identity constructs and cultural practices. 3. Engage in thought-provoking readings, media, and discussions in an immersive environment, thereby actively participating in Spanish-speaking culture. 4. Improve spoken Spanish through small-group discussions, oral interviews, and other activities. 5. Develop writing skills via the engagement of discussions in a challenging but level-appropriate context.
