Course Description

This course explores the meaning of access to justice, in the context of the United States legal system, especially for those who cannot afford to hire an attorney. We will examine the history and role of civil legal aid and pro bono representation in the current delivery system. Innovations in bridging the justice gap will be explored.

Student Outcomes

Students will be able to identify and delineate access to justice issues and poverty law issues. Students will be able to explain the structure and purpose of the U.S. legal system. Students will be able to discuss the ethical implications of a lack of legal representation. Students will be able to appreciate varied disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods of acquiring knowledge and demonstrate the ability to synthesize knowledge from multiple disciplines. Students will be able to develop capacities for clear, thorough and independent thought that demonstrates the ability to analyze arguments on the basis of evidence and to understand the value and limitations of multiple types of evidence
