Course Description

Has capitalism given us heaven on Earth—or hell? And is Heaven itself really all that heavenly? In this course, we will explore different political and religious perspectives on utopia—the optimal human society—and ask whether they are in fact dystopic. We will read excerpts from a wide range of texts including the Communist Manifesto, the Bible, Plato’s Republic, and Brave New World.

Student Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand and value literary and other works as significant artistic and cultural achievements.
  • Students will be able to analyze different philosophical, ethical, political, and other perspectives and identify some of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Students will be able to develop, express, and defend their own views on important philosophical, ethical, political, and other questions both in writing and orally.
