Course Description

The intention of this 300-level course (MUS 362A, Instrumental), the next instrumental Conducting course in sequence to MUS 360 (Conducting One), for undergraduate music majors (BM, BME, BMA) at DePauw University, is to provide greater breadth and depth of knowledge about the various subjects of Conducting and to offer each individual student additional conducting drill as provided by classroom and “live” circumstances.

Student Outcomes

Since conducting at this level can almost become a private lesson, the instructional outcomes of this course will include-- providing the student with additional repetitions of fundamental exercises of the techniques of conducting; adding information to the student’s score study techniques; providing the student with additional texts for cumulative study; undertaking the study of avant-garde trends in conducting technique; broadening the student’s perspective about the historical role of Conducting by the study and preparation of relevant information about an historical conducting personality; structuring the individual student’s acquisition of more refined analytical, leadership and public speaking skills with the confidence built from technical accomplishment; placing these strengthened skills in a more critical rehearsal context.
