Course Description
To gain a more informed knowledge of songwriting and the history of American roots music by studying its form and meaning, its methods of composition, its relationship to technology, and its position in the marketplace; and to compose a handful of original songs. You will be able to analyze how songs have been created and commercially recorded, and how songs function in cultural settings. You will be able to compose song lyrics and to collaborate with other student writers and musicians. You will also be able to earn “W” certification by practicing, developing and improving your research and writing skills, as well as your listening, speaking and analytical skills. You will write and revise several short essays and one major research project. You will have the opportunity to produce a “demo” recording of 1-3 original songs.
