Course Description

The course explores theoretical explanations for criminal behavior, empirical research on crime in diverse contexts and policy debates on crime control and punishment in the U.S. We will place particular emphasis on contemporary issues in criminology such as mass incarceration, felon disenfranchisement, the death penalty, sentencing and innocence, police brutality and the killing of Afro-Americans, sexual assault on college campuses, white collar crimes, and the prison industrial complex. Prerequisite: SOC 100 or sophomore standing.

Student Outcomes

Students will be able to: 1. Define and measure crime. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the major theories that are used to explain criminal behavior. 3. Have a knowledge of contemporary issues in criminology such as mass incarceration, felon disenfranchisement, the death penalty, sentencing and innocence, police brutality and the killing of Afro-Americans, sexual assault on college campuses, white collar crimes, and the prison industrial complex.
