Course Description

The emphasis of this course is on the physics in astrophysics. It would be impossible to survey the astrophysics of the whole universe in just one semester, so I have chosen several topics which I feel particularly emphasize the physics. This semester we will focus on Stellar Astrophysics. The first part of the course (through the first exam) will focus on the properties of stars. In this part you will see how we can apply some basic physics concepts (most of which you already know) to learn much about the nature of stars. The next main topic will be stellar structure. There is a lot of good physics here! Our semester will conclude with a study of stellar evolution.

Student Outcomes

• Develop a solid conceptual and mathematical foundation in the topics covered in this course. • Continue to develop the skills of “thinking like a physicist”. • Expand problem solving skills • Learn mathematical techniques used in the topics of study in this course. • Continue to develop ability to explain conceptual and mathematical ideas in written format, especially as this relates to problem solving in physics.
