Course Description
This course examines the history of East Asian Buddhism through the lens of the contemporary portrayals of Buddhism in global cinema. With critical analysis of a series of ten films that focus on Buddhism, students will gain a basic understanding of key Buddhist doctrines and practices and also demonstrate the ability to critically analyze and evaluate filmic texts.

Student Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Gain sound knowledge about major Buddhist ideas and practices 2. Demonstrate familiarity with significant cinematic works with Buddhist themes 3. Express themselves on issues concerning the viability of film as a means of conveying Buddhist ideas.
