Course Description

In this course, students learn to communicate technical and non-technical information about computer science to technical and non-technical audiences. This writing includes communication with users (for example, in user manuals), the general public (for example, op-ed pieces related to technical issues), and other non- technical audiences (for example, legislators, potential investors, and customers). Students also develop a project proposal document. Some of the writing in this course deals with ethical and social issues.

Student Outcomes

After completing this course, students should be able to do the following: • Explain the types of writing Computer Scientists create as part of their work. • Adjust their writing style to fit audiences that consist of other computer scientists, technical and non-technical colleagues, employers, and the general public. • Leverage specific writing principles such as concision, precision, and consistency. • Use page design to reinforce, rather than detract from, a central message.
