Course Description
First year Italian. First semester. This course focuses on the acquisition of the Italian language within the cultural context. It promotes the acquisition of listening, reading, speaking and writing skills, encouraging students to engage with authentic pedagogical material. In this course all students actively participate in class and pursue proficiency. First year Italian is based on interaction, and each lesson begins with the integration of vocabulary and the contextualization of grammar in conversation. The curriculum includes communicative, student-centered activities focused on Italian culture and society.

Student Outcomes
The student will be able to: 1) Use the written and spoken language beyond one’s understanding of vocabulary developing an intuition for meaning in context 2) Express oneself in Italian on a variety of topics referring to daily life and cultural events in Italy 3) Identify correctly and apply grammatical rule and new vocabulary in the creation of original content in both spoken and written Italian, gaining confidence in articulating their thoughts in a new language
