Course Description

The goal of the First Year Seminar (FYS) course is to introduce you to college level work, and prepare you for future DePauw courses. We will pay special attention to discussion and writing skills using various sources to produce a range of writing assignments. This course will introduce you to the historic Human Genome Project and the millions of DNA sequences that have been generated since its completion in 2003. We will investigate how gene sequencing is accomplished, what scientists can learn from gene sequencing data, genetic manipulation by CRISPR technology, and the ethical considerations surrounding genome databases and genomic information. We will also delve into the diversity issues that plague scientific study in the area of genomics - specifically, the lack of diverse individuals included in the original Human Genome Project, and the implications of that lack of diversity for medicine and health outcomes.
