Course Description
Brass Techniques is a group instruction course designed to acquaint students with the basic skills necessary for the playing and teaching of trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba. Students will learn assembly and care techniques, develop fundamental technical skills, and acquire a basic knowledge of brass pedagogy and performance including embouchure formation, posture, hand position, tone production, articulation, fingerings, breathing, literature, and methodology.

Student Outcomes
Through a variety of in-class activities and outside assignments, the students will: 1. Understand the fundamentals of brass performance, including embouchure formation, posture, hand position, tone production, fingerings, and breathing techniques. 2. Develop performance skills on various brass instruments (trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba) and understand their construction, acoustical properties, and proper care. 3. Explore and evaluate appropriate repertoire and teaching materials for brass students in instrumental music classrooms. 4. Acquire skills to prepare, teach, and evaluate music lessons for developing brass performance skills, including the ability to arrange music for young brass instrumentalists.
