Course Description
MUS 100 Thinking, Listening, Creating with Music is a basic course that enables the non-music major to understand the manner in which the elements of music are constructed and combined in order to form a coherent musical expression. During the semester, we will discover the basic elements that are inherent in almost all types of Western art music, including modern idioms such as rock, pop, rap, and jazz, as well as the traditional music of other cultures around the world. BUT, even better, we will look at the ways these components work individually, how they fit together to create a piece of music, and explore ways to express musical ideas through singing and playing. Our overall goal: create and express original ideas through music composition. No prior experience in music theory, piano, singing, etc. is required for this course.
