Course Description
In this course, students will apply a critical sociological perspective to gain a deeper understanding of an often highly politicized phenomenon: transnational migration. Some of the topics we will cover include: the relationship between globalization and forced displacement, the racialization and exploitation of migrant and immigrant workers, the criminalization of migration, and the effects of mass immigration on local communities and national societies. All of our discussions will emphasize the interplay between social structure and individual agency. While the course adopts a global and historical approach, we will pay particularly close attention to migration to the United States in recent decades.
