Course Description
In this course we will examine religious experience and expression in Hindu India with special emphasis on the contemporary persistence of traditional values and practices. Relevant historical background material will be surveyed to help assess continuity and change in learned and vernacular Hindu religious practices with particular attention to the values that both influence and are displayed in them.

Student Outcomes
Departmental Learning Goals and Student Outcomes 1. Students will be able to understand how religious traditions (Hindu traditions) have shaped—and are shaped in turn by—historical-cultural contexts. 2. Students will be able to recognize the global diversity of religious traditions and the diversity within each tradition (in this case through the study of Hinduism comparatively across time and space). 3. Students will be able to develop robust and responsible ways to think comparatively about religious similarities and differences. Asian Studies Learning Goals and Student Outcomes4. Students will broaden their vistas and worldviews by considering religious and historical issues from Asian perspectives. 5. Students will be able to identify and describe the interconnectedness of all humanity through the study of Asia and the World. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with Asian views of the world. 7. Students will begin to cultivate a life-long habit of thinking globally and acting thoughtfully.
