Course Description

The Senior Seminar is designed to be the capstone experience for Asian Studies majors. Students will undertake a semester-long research, writing, and discussion program resulting in the production of a 30-page final seminar paper (plus 3-5 pages of endnotes and bibliography). The final seminar paper should explore a theme or subject of personal interest in the academic study of Asia. The seminar will culminate in a formal presentation of research to an audience of peers and professors. The seminar will be conducted more like a writing workshop. Seminar papers may be tradition/country-specific or comparative, but they must address a larger theme, question, issue, or problem in the academic study of Asia. The task of the research paper is to relate individual research to a broader theoretical category of interest to scholars of Asia across a spectrum of specific interests. The workshop model of the seminar will allow students to critique and assist each other in their writing processes. The major part of the course will be devoted to writing and revising. Students should come to class prepared both to discuss their own writing and to assist their peers as they write their papers. We will hold individual conference from early on to have a clear focus on your topic.
