Course Description

The fact that the Spanish-speaking world (including the United States) does not have uniform definitions of sex, gender, and ancillary terms is symptomatic of how these social constructs continue to evolve. In this class, we will present how famous figures from the Spanish-speaking world have confirmed, defied, or complicated these interpretations. Students will learn how to apply communication strategies, with an emphasis on language structures and metalinguistics to enhance their academic writing. Students will provide simple reports on the evolution of the terms in the target language. Reading, listening, and speaking strategies will be addressed to a lesser degree.

Student Outcomes

Clearly express their ideas and the ideas of others to varied audiences in Spanish, both in written and oral contexts. Gain an understanding of and question the complexity of cultural products, processes and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world. Develop their communicative competence such that they will be able to progress to the next HISP course in the curricular sequence.
