Course Description

The fact that the Spanish-speaking world (including the United States) cannot uniformly define sex, gender, and ancillary terms is symptomatic of how these social constructs continue to evolve. In this class, we will debate how famous Spanish-speaking persons have confirmed, defied, or complicated these interpretations. To express simple opinions about such complex issues in the target language, students will utilize communication strategies, with a particular emphasis on speaking, listening, and reading. Students will use writing and metacognition skills in service to the course’s learning objectives. NOTE: Most of this class will be conducted in Spanish, there is no textbook for this class.

Student Outcomes

Through successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Clearly express their ideas and the ideas of others to varied audiences in Spanish, both in written and oral contexts. Gain an understanding of and question the complexity of cultural products, processes and perspectives of the Spanish-speaking world. Develop their communicative competence such that they will be able to progress to the next HISP course in the curricular sequence
