Course Description

based on the first three seasons of Dix pour cent (trans. Call My Agent), a popular French comedy-drama television series, and using a cultural studies approach, this course will focus on how the contextually rich texts of the series produce cultural meaning and may (or not) serve as an indicator of ‘French’ cultural values. In addition, the course will focus on real-life language use as well as interpretive and presentational communication through listening/viewing, speaking, and writing in French. Expect to engage in group and pair work and to actively participate in class. A Netflix subscription is required. all course materials will be distributed in class.

Student Outcomes

Identify and discuss at an intermediate level, how the French television series portrays aspects of contemporary French society, including cultural values, social issues, and interpersonal dynamics [Cultural analysis & critical thinking]; Use intermediate-level French language skills to engage in discussions and compose short essays on themes presented in the series and related cultural topics [Language production]; Demonstrate improved French listening comprehension by accurately interpreting dialogues from the series, including colloquial expressions and cultural references [Listening comprehension]
