Course Description

This interdisciplinary course addresses the ways in which contemporary francophone authors and filmmakers respond to and explore themes of cultural fragmentation and identity in postcolonial France and francophone regions through different lenses; thus, all the selected texts, films, and documentaries wrestle with ongoing debates concerning senses of belonging and difference. Although our aim is to understand a range of francophone cultural perspectives these fictional texts offer on these topics, we will –in a cross-cultural context—attempt to reflect upon the challenges presented by the different dynamics that shape our perception of others and ourselves. As we consider these questions – via seminar style discussions and various assignments—you will also work to achieve a greater vocabulary and a stronger command of French grammar.

Student Outcomes

Explain in conceptually appropriate ways key issues associated with the cultural production of the selected Francophone writers and filmmakers. Describe the ways in which different cultural perspectives and approaches to the dominant culture have and continue to impact France and the French-speaking world. Use a greater vocabulary and have a stronger command of French grammar.
