Abstract
The January 11th, 1954 issue of Life is a prime representation of how Life utilized photojournalism, advertisements, and commentary to spread consumerism. From the captivating cover image of the Bates Twins in their debutante wardrobe to the last Camel cigarettes advertisement, Life’s adherence to societal ideals was clear. Life was pivotal in the spread of culture, news, trends, and consumerism to the average middle-class American. Through their influence, they shaped and defined the principles of the middle-class lifestyle and views on communism during the postwar era.
