Abstract

This chapter highlights the routine erasure of the voices and experiences of queer artists of color in the history of queer US theatre. It begins with an overview of theoretical interventions in queer theory by various scholars and artists of color, including Third World and third wave feminisms, intersectionality, queer of color critique, and quare studies. The chapter analyzes plays by Cherríe Moraga (The Hungry Woman), Chay Yew (The Whitelands Trilogy), and Robert O’Hara (Bootycandy), to emphasize the ways in which queer theory, later feminist theory, and the continued development of queer US theatre frequently relies on but elides queer thinkers and creators of color.
