Abstract

A sense of belonging is often the last thing a student expects to find in an archives, but seven college and university archivists from a wide range of campuses will share innovative practices and programmatic changes that foster growth, inclusivity, and build community for high school, college and graduate students in their repositories. Bethany Fiechter from DePauw University will showcase their “You Belong in Archives and Special Collections” campus initiative that impacts their new physical building and programmatic activities. Carrie Meyer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center will share the development of an archives-based course for high school juniors and seniors interested in health sciences. Carrie Schwier from Indiana University will share the educational/mentorship model employed by their repository with their part-time student workers. Lindsay Anderberg from New York University, Tanya Zanish-Belcher from Wake Forest University, April K. Anderson-Zorn from Illinois State University, Deborah Kloiber from Connecticut College, and Carol Street from the University of Kentucky will discuss leveraging student-led curatorial work, class instruction, and archival internships to impact undergraduate research and build research communities. All of these examples center the student, rather than the archivist, to create space for belonging and engagement in one of the unlikeliest places on campus.
