Course Description

This course is designed to introduce you to music teaching as a profession in U.S. public schools, with applications for broader contexts. Together, we will examine issues and factors that influence schools, schooling, and music education through the combination of field observations, synthesis of class readings, and discussion. You will leave this course with a comprehensive understanding of the breadth and depth of music education with its history and traditions, philosophies, problems and possibilities. (InTASC 1, 2, 3 & 4).

Student Outcomes

● Students will be able to describe, analyze and critique the nature and aims of P-12 public school music programs in the United States, as evidenced by the Influential Teacher Interview assignment, Field Observation Reflection assignments, and written assessments on course readings. ● Students will be able to locate, summarize and utilize practitioner publications, professional literature, and Indiana music education standards as evidenced by the Music Education Journal Summary assignment, written assessments on course readings, and in-class projects. ● Students will be able to engage in serious reflection on the moral and ethical aspects of traditional school music education practices relating to class, race/ethnicity, gender, and culture group as evidenced by written assessments on course readings and in-class discussions (DePauw University Learning Goal 10). ● Students will be able to describe concepts emphasized by prominent philosophies of music education, as evidenced by written assessments on course readings and in-class discussions. ● Students will be able to construct and articulate personal philosophical beliefs related to music education and music education instruction as evidenced by their Personal Philosophy of Music Education assignment, written assessments on course readings and in-class discussions.
