Course Description

This course introduces the elements of contemporary and traditional Chinese culture. It provides students with a fundamental yet diverse knowledge of China and its culture through examination of its manifestations: political, religious, social, cultural, and economic. Topics include history, traditional belief systems, society, languages, arts and literature, performance traditions, daily life and customs, ethnicity and gender issues, science and technology, business and government.

Student Outcomes

  • Gain appreciation for Asian perspectives and Asian conceptions of the world through the exploration of Chinese culture
  • Develop critical literacy on Asia’s relations with the US and the West through identifying and appreciating contemporary issues in China
  • Inspire curiosity about Asian interdisciplinarity through exposure to a wide range of disciplinary approaches to studying China
  • Develop critical thinking skills with specific application toward the study of culture, Asia, and China
  • Prepare students for future experiences, including visiting China and other Chinese societies and thinking about and engaging with topics related to China and Chinese culture in various arenas, e.g. politics, business, academics, international affairs, etc.
  • Engagement with cultural difference (GL): students will gain a critical understanding of perspectives and voices of specific people and places outside of the US, specifically in China and other Chinese communities.
  • Historical/structural analysis (GL): students will have the opportunity to understand and analyze complex historical relationships surrounding Chinese culture.
  • Recognition and development of cross-cultural skills (GL): Students will develop a self- reflective sensibility towards culture, difference, and cross-cultural experience.
  • Students will explore cultural, economic, political, and social questions. Through observational, comparative, and analytic methods, they seek to understand human identities and interactions at the personal, local, and global levels. (SS)
