Course Description

Includes laboratory. This course presents advanced concepts of molecular biology with the experimental evidence and practice of genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology. Lectures focus on explaining biological phenomena in molecular and biochemical terms, including DNA-Protein interactions in gene regulation, and provide conceptual support for the laboratory experiments. Laboratory work focuses on a semester-long project using biochemical and molecular techniques.

Student Outcomes

After taking this class, you will be able to

  • Explain the current understanding of how genes work at the level of DNA, RNA and proteins.
  • Demonstrate your working knowledge of molecular biological techniques and data analysis in both theory and practice.
  • Readily obtain information from primary scientific literature in addition to your textbook. More broadly, to encourage your development as independent learners.
  • Show improvement in your scientific writing skills in the form of journal-style lab reports.
