Course Description

In the course we will write several dramatic scripts intended for the theatre, film or television. Each genre will be introduced and briefly practiced and students will choose a genre within which to write a longer dramatic piece. We will also read, study and discuss dramatic texts from different genres, not only as works of literature, but also as blueprints for performances. Accordingly, the dramatic texts will be studied in terms of historical context, form, dramatic structure, style, and theatrical/cinematic conventions. In addition to the dramatic works themselves we will also read and discuss some biographical profiles as well as theoretical writing and criticism. We will also attend and discuss the local performances of two plays and attend local film screenings. Other course objectives are to improve your writing skills through writing short, informal written exercises, short formal essays and one research paper; and to develop your critical and analytical skills through participating in class discussions.
