Course Description

This course is designed to provide the student with an introductory “hands on” experience process in electronic media design and production. Communication 236 places special emphasis on developing the student's written and performance capabilities in support of electronic visual communication. As part of these developments students in Com. 236 will be required to complete 3 video production projects. These projects will emphasize the following: 1. The development of preproduction materials. 2. Production skills including videography, audio, technical directing, and directing. 3. Post production editing and graphic design. As we become active participants in the television environment and as part of this course we as a class will take a critical look at television’s broad influences on our culture by examining the types of messages found in our favorite TV shows. Throughout the semester students will be required to write “talk back” paper analyzing “the messages” contained in our selected TV programs. In class students will share their analysis as a prelude to that day’s discussion. These ongoing reflections and discussions will provide us with an opportunity to explore the role of media in shaping our values and beliefs. Our goal here is to increase self-awareness, personal voice, speaking skills, writing, and critical thinking. Additionally, students will be “required” to do short in class projects that will expose them to a variety of production methods and techniques. Failure to do theses projects will result in -1/2 off your grade for each talkback missed. Talkbacks include: Photo exercise Talkback Interview paper Lighting Blue screen Multi Camera Editing

Student Outcomes

As a student given 3 class projects to produce, you will able to: 1. Successfully operate remote and studio based production equipment 2. Direct one studio based production 3. Write, shoot, and edit a Natural Sound Video 4. Create and produce a Commercial Video.
