Course Description

This theatre history class explores depictions of marginalized groups and individuals in drama, theatre, film, and other popular entertainment in the United States from the mid-19th through the 21st century. Texts include written plays, films, readings, and live performance.

Student Outcomes

  • Students will compare depictions of marginalized people in drama, performance, and film in various historical contexts.
  • Students will compare significant theorists and practitioners in drama, theatre, and film in the 19th and 20th centuries
  • Students will analyze the impact of drama, theatre, and film in maintaining or subverting status quo
  • Students will explore concepts, theories and terminology of feminist theatre
  • Students will develop critical analysis skills and to hone communication skills through discussion, presentations, and writing.
  • Students will identify components of a scholarly journal article.
  • Students will organize and synthesize secondary and primary sources to construct an argument for a research paper and cite sources appropriately.
