Course Description

This course provides students an opportunity to directly study an area of selected interest within the discipline while examining contemporary issues relevant to the field. This course provides students numerous opportunities for oral participation through various assignments and activities centered around article reviews, discussions, group debates, and presentations of common issues prevalent in the discipline today. Students will also complete and present a senior paper/thesis question on a selected topic.

Student Outcomes

After completion of this class, the student will be able to: 1. Describe science and scientific literature. 2. Describe the process of evidence-based practice, and identify journals where scientific research is published in the various sub-disciplines of Kinesiology. 3. Describe and identify the various types of scientific articles, (original article, review, etc.) 4. Describe the hierarchy of article types. 5. Describe the basics of scientific experimental design and how to identify them within a paper. 6. Describe search engines that can be used to find scientific articles. 7. Describe the wording and keywords, and Boolean logic used in literature searches. 8. Describe the statistical methods used in literature, particular in review papers.
