Course Description
The goals of this course are to provide an introduction to the impact of physical activity and sedentary behavior on health. Students will explore the benefits of physical activity related to physical and mental health. Course readings and class discussions will include a focus on the impact of physical activity on children, adults and older adults. In addition, the course will explore physical activity guidelines beyond the United States and the impact of physical activity and sedentary behavior as it relates to issues of public health across the globe. Class experiences are to a) become familiar with the impact of physical activity and sedentary behavior, b) appreciate the value of depth of knowledge to serve as a foundation for future learning and application and c) understand methods of inquiry that lead to scientific knowledge.

Student Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to: • Describe the prevalence of physical activity and sedentary behavior in different populations. • Explain the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior and health outcomes. • Discuss critically the evidence for the effect of exercise/physical activity on physical and mental health and the possible mechanisms for the effect. • Understand the factors that influence physical activity and sedentary behavior participation. • Communicate the benefits of physical activity and the physical activity guidelines to key audiences (eg scientific and lay persons). • Demonstrate a critical awareness of subjective and objective measures of physical activity. • Describe and evaluate interventions to promote physical activity in global populations and settings.
