Course Description

An introduction to the art and craft of writing for newspapers, including story structure, research techniques, interviewing, note taking, ethics, libel and AP Style. Students will hone their writing and reporting skills by covering campus events, writing stories on deadline and following national and local media coverage.

Student Outcomes

By the end of the semester students will be able to: 1. Write and edit a minimum of four news articles. 2. Conduct interviews (face-to-face, phone and/or email) as a primary research source to inform content development. 3. Analyze weekly news reviews of current events. 4. Conduct a minimum of two peer review and editing projects with Associated Press style. 5. Gather and present information on current industry practices and standards from professional journalism and media organizations. 6. Learn and use standard journalistic terms and jargon. 7. Create a story pitch letter. 8. Create a portfolio to showcase the journalistic work developed in class
